Like many others, Manhattan Labor and Delivery Nurse Shonna Carter was in disbelief about the true magnitude of the pandemic when it was formally declared. Reality set in for the mother of two when schools shut down and anxiety set in about keeping herself and her loved ones safe. Carter's worst fears came true when despite her family's decision to avoid visiting her immunocompromised father in Maryland, he contracted the coronavirus around Christmas of 2020 and died from complications shortly thereafter.
