R.I.P James Van Der Beek, Dylan Hoyt on Medium

James Van Der Beek, who appeared as Dylan Hoyt in the Medium episode "All in the Family," has died.

PEOPLE reports that the actor's wife, Kimberly Van Der Beek, shared the news in a heartfelt Instagram post. She wrote, "Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning. He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace. There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity and the sacredness of time. Those days will come. For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend."

Van Der Beek was born on March 8, 1977, in Cheshire, Connecticut. He began acting in theater during middle school and made his professional debut off-Broadway in 1993 in the New York premiere of Edward Albee's play Finding the Sun.

The actor is best known for playing Dawson Leery on Dawson's Creek in the late 1990s and early 2000s, and for his role as FBI Agent Elijah Mundo on CSI: Cyber with Patricia Arquette.

In 2009, before starring together in the crime drama, he appeared on Medium. In that episode, his character Dylan Hoyt and his sister needed help finding their mother. He also had roles on shows like Criminal Minds, How I Met Your Mother, One Tree Hill, Mercy, and Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23, as well as in films such as The Big Bang and Scary Movie.

He was 48 years old.
