Alexis Bledel said starring on Gilmore Girls was educational: '''I wasn't really allowed to watch TV as a kid''

Rory Gilmore was the top student at Chilton Preparatory School, sorry, Paris. She focused on her studies, aimed for good grades, and wanted to graduate at the top of her class. Still, she found time for boyfriends, hung out with her best friend Lane, and enjoyed mother-daughter time with Lorelai (Lauren Graham).

You might assume that since Alexis Bledel played Rory so well and delivered her lines naturally, she understood all the pop culture references in the script. But she actually didn’t.

"It becomes second nature after a while - you begin to retain a lot of the words first thing in the morning. At the beginning, it was definitely a challenge to memorize all the stuff. I wasn't really allowed to watch TV as a kid, except 'Sesame Street,' so I don't know what a lot of the references are on the show without looking them up. It's been educational," she told the Kenosha News in 2002.

During the interview, which took place after Gilmore Girls finished filming its second season, she was also asked about Rory's love triangle with Dean (Jared Padalecki) and Jess (Milo Ventimiglia).

"They've been kind of hinting at the idea that something might happen (between the three characters). I think at the end of season two, there's kind of - not really a resolution but something actually occurs, and some things are decided. It makes sense for the character because she just threw herself into the relationship so openly, because she didn't really know any better. She finds things out about it later on, which is inevitable because she's so young."
