From a very early age, food was influential in Adrienne Lo's life. She worked in a restaurant while still in college and then spent a year volunteering on farms in Italy. After returning to the U.S., she got a job at Whole Foods in Chicago. Lo and colleague Abe Conlon then teamed up to start an underground supper club in the city. They eventually decided to open a restaurant specializing in food inspired by the flavors of Macau, a former Portuguese territory that is now part of China.

Fat Rice, as it is called, opened in 2012, serving what the owners call "Euro-Asian comfort food." It has been named one of the 50 best restaurants in the world by Diners Club, one of many awards Fat Rice has received.
