Shannen Doherty wasn't sure how people would respond to Charmed

A show about witches isn't an uncommon plot nowadays, but in the '90s, viewers were still getting used to this type of content. (although there were witch shows and movies in the mid-60s, 70s & 80s)

"I wasn't sure at all how people would respond to it," Shannen Doherty said, who played Prue Halliwell, the eldest of the trio of sister witches. During her conversation with the Associated Press in 1998, she added that the series' success was, "a shock —  a wonderful shock." The article states that Charmed turned its network into "the hip place for teenagers," which was a very vital spot to be in.

In the '90s, the teen demographic became THE demographic to market towards. Back then, attention spans were longer, and teens were watching television more than anyone else. Doherty would know; she starred in Beverly Hills, 90210 before working with Aaron Spelling again for Charmed. Why did she choose to join the show alongside Holly Marie Combs and Alyssa Milano, who would play her sisters, Piper and Phoebe?

"The storyline was adorable, and I had never done anything that involved special effects."

Although the show lasted for eight seasons, Doherty was only on seasons 1-3. If you aren't aware of the show's premises, Charmed follows the Halliwell sisters, known as The Charmed Ones. Prue (Shannen Doherty), Piper (Holly Marie Combs), and Phoebe (Alyssa Milano) are the most powerful good witches of all time. Combined, the "Power of Three," which is their intense connection, is used to protect the innocent from evil beings such as demons and warlocks.
