Kartemquin Films executive director Betsy Steinberg has this message for up-and-coming women in the film industry: "Know yourself. Know your value. Be assertive and open-minded." She explains further in the video above, "There's no shame in really understanding that coming into a first job, you couldn't possibly know everything."
Before taking over Kartemquin Films, Steinberg spent eight years as the managing director of the Illinois Film Office. It was there, that she played a crucial role in passing the Illinois film tax credit, making the state a film destination. Steinberg also served on the Governor's Roundtable on the Creative Arts and the boards of Free Spirit Media, Chicago Media Project and the Midwest Independent Film Festival. In 2018 alone, she has executive produced numerous documentaries, including Minding the Gap, Cooked: Survival by Zip Code, America to Me, Eating Up Easter and Lady Parts Justice in the New World Order.
