Meet the women featured in The Power and Perseverance: Women and the Pandemic:
Dr. Kate Deisseroth:
When the COVID-19 pandemic swept the United States, it wreaked havoc on air force veteran, orthopedic surgeon and single mom Dr. Kate Deisseroth's ability to work and have child-care full time. Kate spent months searching for a way to reconfigure her life, ultimately devising a plan that would allow her to better balance her personal and professional responsibilities.
Jessyca Mathews:
High school teacher Jessyca Mathews gained national attention for her opinion letter published in The Washington Post (2020), in which she expressed the challenges a teacher faces during the pandemic. Many students like hers were facing economic struggles without home internet or access to a quiet place for virtual learning.
Ellen Kuwana:
In March 2020, Ellen Kuwana founded WeGotThisSeattle, a volunteer emergency relief project that has fed more than 56,000 frontline and essential workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Through this effort to date, she has fundraised over $126,000 and helped keep more than 150 Seattle restaurants in business.
