"It's one thing to be a police officer," said Chicago Police Sergeant Janice Wilson. "And then to be a female as well is a different set of challenges. Sometimes we have to work 10 times harder just to kind of find our way on the job."

She said that she felt the need to prove herself for a long time when she joined the force. That hard work paid off, though. Wilson was recently promoted to sergeant with the Chicago Police Department, and her advice to newcomers is to learn everything that you can. "Be an asset, not a liability," she says. "Knowledge is power. It really is."
